Haiku 20: New Year Goddess

Here is today's haiku:

あばら家も年徳神の御宿哉

And in romaji:

abara ya mo toshi tokujin no o-yado kana

And English: "Even this wreck, my hut, welcomes the New Year goddess (kana)."

This is a haiku by Issa, one of many haiku about his ramshackle home. This one is specifically about how his home, no matter how dilapidated, can be home to Toshi-Tokujin, the goddess of the New Year. She is a lucky goddess, but she likes things to be neat and tidy, so you need to tidy up your home... even if it is rundown and dilapidated, like Issa's poor hut.

My vocabulary for today:

宿
やど
"lodging"
