Haiku 18: In the morning glories

Here is today's haiku:

朝顔に釣瓶とられてもらひ水

And in romaji:

asagao ni tsurube torarete morai mizu

And English: "In the morning glories, well-bucket's stuck: go get water."

This is another haiku by Chiyo-Ni, whom I featured yesterday also with her poem First Snow. You'll see this poem translated in various ways, but the idea is always the same: morning glories have overgrown the well-bucket, and rather than ripping away the flowers, Chiyo-Ni is going to go get water somewhere else.

One of my favorite things about learning Japanese is seeing how metaphors work across languages: the flower called "morning glory" is asa-gao in Japanese, "morning-face."
